How The Sun Can Help Improve Your Oral Health

The summer sun may be hot, but it’s also a handy helper. It can help grow your garden, light your path, and even boost your body’s levels of vitamin D. For years now, we’ve been hearing the myriad benefits of vitamin D. This powerhouse fat-soluble vitamin and hormone can help your body absorb calcium, help your immune system function properly, and even fight dangerous inflammation. But did you know it also has oral health benefits, too? Here’s why when it comes to safeguarding your smile, you shouldn’t be afraid to step out into the sunshine!

The Benefits of Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a pretty cool vitamin that our body needs to function properly. You can get it through supplements, food, and even through exposure to sunshine. In fact, between five and 30 minutes of sunlight per day is all it takes to boost your levels and reap its many health benefits. You can even wear your SPF or sunglasses while you do it!

Vitamin D and Inflammation

One of the most important things vitamin D does for your body is to help fight inflammation. Inflammation can be a major cause and effect of gum disease, so getting adequate levels of vitamin D can often help lessen the severity of your symptoms or even help you prevent gum disease altogether.

Vitamin D and Calcium Absorption

Another great benefit of vitamin D is its ability to help you better absorb calcium. Calcium is an essential mineral in helping you grow stronger bones and teeth, so getting proper amounts can help you resist cavities and keep your smile looking healthy and bright!

Vitamin D and Immune Function

When your immune system is weak, you are more susceptible to illness and could even have a harder time healing should you get sick. If you have a condition such as periodontal disease, this can make it harder for your body to fight the infection, making it easier for dangerous bacteria to attack your gums. This in turn can make your symptoms worse and could pose an even greater risk to your oral health.

If You Can’t Get Outside

While exposure to the sun is a great way to get a free boost of vitamin D, you can also increase your levels by adding these foods to your regular diet:

  • Milk
  • Eggs
  • Fatty fish
  • Fortified foods such as cereal, yogurt, and orange juice

You can even speak to your dentist about incorporating a vitamin D supplement into your daily routine.

Remember, though it can be dangerous if you don’t properly protect yourself, the sun has many benefits including the ability to help your body produce vitamin D. This summer don’t hide inside. Step into the light and start reaping the amazing benefits of vitamin D!
